About Stetrix, Inc.

Stetrix is dedicated to developing innovative, non-invasive medical devices that assist women during childbirth. Products are focused on preventing frequent, previously unaddressed and expensive-to-treat complications, as opposed to treating the complications after they occur. Stetrix was founded in 2007 and its principle product, the Hem-Avert® perianal stabilizer is FDA approved to prevent external hemorrhoids during vaginal childbirth. The company’s products are manufactured in the U.S., tested extensively and are latex-free.

The Hem-Avert® Perianal Stabilizer was invented by a concerned husband and father after watching his wife suffer the devastating effects of external hemorrhoids during childbirth. After researching the condition, he realized that delivery-induced hemorrhoids are one of the leading complications of childbirth, a condition that affects between 750,000 and 1,000,000 women in the U.S. each year. During pregnancy, women gain additional blood volume. Pressure from the baby exiting the birth canal and from pushing often makes the anus overextend and gorge with blood. For many women, this results in delivery-induced external hemorrhoids.

Applying pressure by hand is labor intensive and prevents obstetricians and midwives from performing other much needed tasks. Stetrix, Inc. spent years developing a safe and effective, externally applied device that applies pressure during the second stage of labor. The sterile, naturally contoured device helps stabilize the perianal area, preventing perianal tissue from gorging with blood, thus greatly reducing the risks of hemorrhoids during childbirth. Learn more about the product here.

External Hemorrhoids Caused by Childbirth

FDA Clearance

The Hem-Avert® Perianal Stabilizer received commercial approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on February 1, 2011, as the first product clinically shown to prevent external hemorrhoids during vaginal childbirth. Clinical data from a multi-center, randomized trial enabled the device to receive the following indication for use:

The Hem-Avert® Perianal Stabilizer is designed to provide counter-pressure to the anus during vaginal childbirth. This counter-pressure force helps prevent the occurrence of external hemorrhoids during vaginal childbirth. This instrument is for external use only.

Clinical Studies

The company conducted a multi-site, non-significant risk clinical study for the Hem-Avert® Perianal Stabilizer. Findings from the clinical study showed that none of the women randomized to use the device during labor and delivery developed hemorrhoids. Conversely, 25% of women randomized to the control group and who delivered without the Hem-Avert® device developed hemorrhoids as a direct result of vaginal delivery, a finding consistent with the percentages of women who sustain delivery-induced hemorrhoids documented in medical literature.
